An operating system (OS) is software that enables the operation of a computer. The most important component of an operating system is the kernel, which controls and manages the computer hardware. In addition, there are basic programs that support the start of the operating system and its configuration. These include boot loaders, device drivers, system services, program libraries and utility programs. A distinction is made between single- and multi-user systems.
